Use of VHD

Greetings.
I recently read this article in How-To Geek: http://www.howtogeek.com/125704/how-to-extract-individual-files-from-a-windows-7-system-image-backup/
Prior to reading it, I had no knowledge of the virtual hard disk (VHD) feature in Win7. So I did some googling and read a bit about VHD from here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/ee872416.aspx
I've been a user of Sandboxie (fabulous piece of software) for several years and am a firm believer in using virtualization as a primary tool in my security arsenal. I'm curious to know if and how the VHD feature in Win7 can be used in that regard.
