I generally highly recommend Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) as it's:
1. not really third party security software
2. proven to be fairly effective by AV-comparatives etc
3. completely free
4. fairly light on the system
As for your post, I think you're basically saying that MSE was able to detect but couldn't clean the virus. I'd suggest using Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware for cleaning an infected machine if your primary antivirus fails to do this.
This doesn't mean MSE is not a "good antivirus". I don't really believe "antivirus" software are "good" in general anyway haha - it's all a roll of the dice as to whether they will detect/clean something or not. But I suppose they are better than nothing.
