How to disable Firefox Extension Compatibility Checking
With the recent public release of Firefox 4 final, some Add-ons/extensions remain "incompatible" by default. This means that by default, you aren't able to use these Add-ons. This has been an ongoing issue for years with each new Firefox release.
About 2-3 years ago, I discovered a way around this. This page describes the theory behind it:
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Extensions.checkCompatibility
The idea is to disable the "compatibility checking" mechanism in Firefox, and therefore "force" the Add-on to work. Here's how to do it:
1. Open Firefox
2. Type "about:config" in the address bar
3. Get past the "warning" screen
4. Context-click (right-click) anywhere in the list of preferences
5. In the context menu, select "New", then select "Boolean"
6. Type or copy and paste the following:
7. Set to "False"
8. Click OK and then restart Firefox
Now you have disabled "compatibility checking", you can install whatever Firefox Add-on you want. Of course, the compatibility checking is there for a reason - to minimise the risk of instability with "incompatibile" Add-ons. But from what I've observed, most "incompatible" Add-ons are able to run fairly smoothly anyway.
